When
we bought the pop up
it had a nice looking 11' awning stuffed inside a storage compartment.
The only
problem was there were no poles and we had no clue how it was suppose
to be set
up. After searching the internet, I found an owner manual for a jayco
that I
could down load. It showed how to hook everything up. Now it was time
to search
for the poles and hardware. Man, that stuff cost some $$$$. I found
that unless
I knew exactly what size pole or a parts number the poles could not be
found.
Oh I could just order a new awning and it would come with all the
hardware, was
the answer I got a lot also.
Well since I love to tinker with things and create stuff I
though about making my
own. Again I searched the internet and found that there are several
people that
have made theirs and/or modified theirs. I decided to go cheap. I
bought 5- 1
1/4" PVC pipes and a 1 1/2" pipe, a few elbows and a T. I also bought
2- 2" T's.
Now the wheels are turning in this head of mine. I cut the pipe to fit
the
front of the awning and placed the T in the middle and elbows on each
end. Just inside the elbows I placed the 2" T's. Then
I cut 3 pipes to make the rafters to the camper. Next I cut the 1 1/2"
in
half and inserted a 4' piece of the 1 1/4 inside it. I drilled several
holes
1" apart in the smaller piece so it could be adjustable. I
attached the 1 1/2" pipe into the T next to the elbow, this allows for
the legs to rotate into the position I want to set them in. .
Now I can
use these poles as regular upright end poles or I can attach them to
the frame
of the camper and adjust them out. I attached all the frame
poles with
small bolts and used a small clevis pin for the legs.
Pictures
will be added once I take the awning
down and can lay it out so it’s easier to see and understand.
